Rethinking focal points

by Lucy Bryant, Wednesday 09 September 2015

Here at YOUhome, we are always on the lookout for unique ways to style properties. This week sees us look beyond paintings as a key focal point and explore alternative ways to liven up a space.   Whether it be a colourful rug, statement wallpapers or bold blinds here are some simple ways to put a characterful stamp on your home!

A statement rug has the ability to transform a room, creating a focal point that can sit centrally in a room or brighten up a hallway. Paired with neutral toned walls, a jazzy rug can become the focal point, injecting your personal taste and style into the room. Pictured below is a contemporary Zig-Zag rug from John Lewis.

In the bedroom, fun, patterned wallpaper is a great way to highlight a wall and add character. By using a pattern, the eye is drawn to a particular part of the room and this works particularly well behind the bed. Yet, this technique isn’t only for the grown-ups, brands such as Cath Kidston (as pictured) have created fun patterned wallpapers that are bound to make little ones keen to keep a tidy room!

Another versatile way to create an elegant focal point is by hanging patterned curtains or blinds. By day, decorative blinds can be an excellent way to mimic hanging art and when the sun sets, blinds add a splash of colour creating a cosy and comfortable atmosphere.

A great way to inject patterns into a space is through upholstery. By re-upholstering a tired sofa or chair you can completely transform a room, adding a unique stamp to the space. Upholstering can also be used in other areas of the house, items such as dining room chair covers and ottomans can also be a great way to introduce a pop of personality.

In the dining area a dresser can be the perfect way to display stylish crockery whilst evoking a relaxed and personal tone. By displaying your favourite or day-to-day crockery such as Emma Bridgewater (pictured below) the dining space reflects your personal taste but also allows for it to be used and enjoyed!
