Weekend Guide

by Lucy Bryant, Thursday 01 October 2015

With such a sunny start to October it hardly feels like autumn at all and this weekend’s guide is full of light-hearted fun to compliment the bright forecast. The crunch –time England rugby game is not to be missed, (even if it is to be viewed through our fingers) and our guide for the top spots to watch the Rugby World Cup in West London is definitely worth a read for those who are seeking a screening!

On Friday, increase your laughter levels by heading to the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room for Late Night Laughs hosted by Richard Herring. Herring will be joined by award-winning stand-up Alun Cochrane, who masters in observational comedy and storytelling and has featured in several TV shows including Mock the Week and Michael McIntyre’s comedy Roadshow. If that isn’t enough to get you giggling, Lloyd Griffith, professional choirboy and comedian is sure to provide a fresh and quirky take on modern life! Doors open at £9pm and for more ticket information head to:

Throughout the weekend the London Literature Festival will be running in the Southbank Centre. This year’s festival embraces the spirit of adventure, inviting you to explore the world through words. Ranging from dramatic mass readings to lively debates and literary-themed cocktail hours as well as a young-adult literary festival there is plenty to sink your teeth, and indeed eyes, into this year! Highlights include an interactive multimedia journey through Terry Gilliam’s imagination and a four-day performed reading of Meliville’s Moby-Dick. There will also be a host of comedians performing including Sara Pascoe and Tim Key for literature-inspired comedy! The festival also marks the prize readings of the prestigious 2015 Man Booker Prize and the Forward Prizes for Poetry 2015 so if reading is your favourite pass-time this is a not-to-be-missed event! If the weather remains bright then there really is no excuse not to head to Hyde Park to enjoy the sunshine. The Serpentine Bar and Kitchen, located in the centre of Hyde Park at the edge of the beautiful Serpentine lake, offers a great outdoor seating area which is nothing short of perfect in the sun. Serving pizzas made to order in a wood-fired oven as well as British classics such as fish and chips and seasonal salads makes this a great location for the whole family to enjoy the (predicted) blue skies this weekend. The gin bar is a great excuse to indulge in an afternoon tipple in the sunshine with friends In addition to sit down meals the small entrance shop also serves sandwiches, fresh smoothies, cake and coffee if you prefer to pack a picnic rug!
