East Dulwich lies about 5 miles due south of London Bridge. It is a largely residential area of characterful Victorian buildings with Lordship Lane as its hub. To the west and south is Dulwich Village with Peckham Rye and Peckham to the east. The whole area is characterised by numerous wide green spaces, pretty streets, a fantastic High Street and very good local schools which are a huge draw to the area and which makes it a really terrific place to bring up a family.
The aforementioned Lordship Lane is a real star of the show. Full of independent shops, bars, restaurants and pubs, it provides a real central focus for the area and is key to the villagey feel of the area. Independent butchers, fishmongers, bakers and cheese shops make it a mecca for foodies and the community particularly comes alive on a Saturday with a market on North Cross Road and all the shops busy with local custom. Huge green spaces such as Dulwich Park, Dulwich Woods, Peckham Rye and Horniman Gardens are all close by adding to the community feel.
The area can genuinely be summed up as a village lifestyle on the edge of the City.
The area has fantastic transport links with several Overground stations nearby, giving access to Central London in 15 minutes. Far better than the squash on the underground! There are extensive bus routes that allow access to all parts of London and it is only a 30 minute cycle ride into London.
The area was largely created in the 1900’s and the homes were built for London workers who couldn’t afford to live in the city centre, but who were still reasonably affluent. As a result the properties were designed with enough space for families. There are now many four and five bedroom houses that are still very affordable when compared to prices in central London.
There is so much to discover along Lordship Lane that it is the street itself that provides one of the main highlights. Peckham Rye offers all sorts of organised sport and leisure activities. The famous Horniman Museum with its gardens and children’s museum is to the south and there is the charming picture house cinema on Lordship Lane. Trendy Peckham with all its bars is also just around the corner.
Not only are there 3 highly sought-after outstanding state primary schools in the area there is also the Charter School; a very good state secondary school. The area is also renowned for its independent schools such as Alleyns, James Allens and Dulwich College amongst others.
